THE YARN BEHIND THE BREW
Before Jandals were a Kiwi birthright, they were just a good idea based on the traditional Japanese Sandal. John Cowie of Taranaki saw potential where others didnât and began making a plastic version of the jandal in the 1940s.
Unfortunately, Cowieâs innovative spirit didnât translate into the savviest of business chops - the trademark and patent later being secured by a slippery entrepreneur from Auckland who introduced a rubber version of the flip flop.
This Hazy IPA celebrates the kiwi innovative spirit - collaborating with HÄpi Hop Research trialling different techniques of hop additions and how they diversify flavour. Join us in raising a glass of âSole Traderâ to the pioneers of versatile footwears and great beers - Cheers.
BREWERS NOTES
Sole Trader Hazy IPA is part of a Hapi Hop Research project commissioned for HÄpi Symposium in March 2026.
Shining Peak Brewing (Hazy IPA), Brave Brewing (Hoppy Pilsner) and Altitude Brewing (WCIPA) Â brewed three different styles of beer, each using identical amounts of Nelson Sauvin and Southern Cross hops from the Tasman region. Each brewery had the discretion to decide when to introduce their hops to the brewing cycle.
Once packaged, the beers are sent to a lab to analyze the levels of thiols, esters, and terpenes extracted through different brewing processes. Results will be presented at the HÄpi Symposium in late-March 2026.
