THE YARN BEHIND THE BREW
Ronald Hugh Morrieson wrote his novel, ‘Came a Hot Friday’ in 1963 - one of his many stories that was only recognized after his death. Due to this lack of royalties, Ronald earned his keep by playing in dance bands around the South Taranaki clubs and pubs - venues that would become inspiration for his tales of gambling, debauchery, boozing and ‘loose women’.
His character, ‘Te Whakinga Kid’ was a western loving ‘bandito’, terrorising locals with his toy cap gun. Billy T James played ‘The Tainuia Kid’ in the motion picture, a slight tweak on the name so as not to confuse American viewers with the word ‘Whakinga’.
Bandito is a very lean, dry IPA using Nectaron from NZ Hops and Sauvin and Waimea from Freestyle. The Nectaron lays a tropical stonefruit base for the fresh passionfruit and white wine hit of Nelson Sauvin to punch through. An extremely refreshing and balanced IPA.
